Sarah Palin made all the headlines at Friday night's fundraiser for Orange County Republicans – but Speaker-designate Dean Cannon was recognized as well. Cannon received the first annual Paula Hawkins award, in honor of the classy woman who was Florida's first female senator and passed away a few months ago. Hawkins' daughter, Genean , explained afterwards that Cannon was being honored "for his quick and sure response to the astounding missteps by the previous state party leadership."  

Rep. Sandy Adams , who's running for the Republican nomination to take on freshman Democratic U.S. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas , has re-scheduled a fundraiser being hosted by the family of former U.S. Sen. Paula Hawkins , the recently deceased Republican icon.  

State Rep. Sandy Adams , R-Orlando, is holding a fundraiser tomorrow at the Winter Park home of Adam McKinnon , grandson of the late Paula Hawkins , who was Florida's first female U.S. Senator in the 1980s. Gene Hawkins , Paula's husband of more than 50 years, is a special guest. Adams is running for the Republican nomination to oppose freshman Democratic U.S. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas of New Smyrna Beach.  

Venus, a chow mix, has a personality to match his name: out of this world. What the super-friendly dog doesn't have, however, is a permanent home. Although he's been in and out of foster homes during the first year of his life, Venus still awaits his forever home.
